Laundry enzymes are specialized proteins added to many detergents to help remove stains. Rather than simply lifting soil from fabric, they speed up chemical reactions that break large stain molecules into smaller, more water-soluble pieces. This lets the detergent’s surfactants carry loosened soils away in the wash. Enzymes are commonly used in both laundry and dishwashing products.

Different enzymes target different kinds of messes:

           - **Proteases** break down protein stains, including blood, sweat, grass, egg, and dairy.

           - **Amylases** tackle starches from foods such as pasta, rice, potatoes, sauces, and gravy.

           - **Lipases** act on fats and oils, including cooking oil, butter, salad dressing, lipstick, and body oils.

           - **Mannanases** help remove stains containing guar gum or mannan, thickeners often used in ice cream, condiments, and processed foods.

            - **Cellulases** support fabric care rather than conventional stain removal. They trim loose cellulose microfibers on cotton, which can reduce graying, smooth the surface, and help release trapped dirt.

Most enzyme-based detergents use a blend rather than a single enzyme because real-life laundry stains are usually mixed. For example, a tomato-pasta spill may contain starch, oil, and protein, so amylase, lipase, and protease can each contribute to cleaning.

You will find laundry enzymes most often in biological laundry detergents, including liquids, powders, pods, stain-remover sprays, laundry boosters, and some pre-soak products. Product labels may list “enzymes” generally, or name specific types such as protease and amylase. Not every detergent includes them: enzyme-free formulas are also sold, particularly for consumers seeking simpler ingredient lists or particular fabric-care preferences.

The practical benefit is targeted cleaning: enzymes help detergents work effectively on food, body, and outdoor stains without requiring every wash to rely solely on harsher chemistry or high temperatures.
